Lynn Huff Baptist Beaches Patient
For the past 11 years, Beaches resident Lynn Huff has never missed The Masters. Every year, he anxiously anticipates watching the world’s greatest golfers battle it out in Augusta, Ga. But it was during the 2008 tournament when severe pain in his hip area got in the way of one of his favorite activities.
“I really didn’t think much of it at first, because the course is really hilly, and groin injuries can occur when you’re not used to walking in such conditions,” Lynn said. “I thought it would go away over time, however, when it didn’t, I decided to make an appointment to see my orthopedist, Dr. Lancaster, at Baptist Beaches.”
After a series of X-rays, Dr. Lancaster discovered that rather than a groin injury, Lynn’s condition required much more extensive treatment—a hip replacement. Cartilage in Lynn’s hip socket had worn away, leaving him with the pain of bone rubbing bone.
“I was completely shocked,” Lynn said. “I didn’t believe him and decided to continue to endure the pain because I thought it would eventually go away.”
It wasn’t until several months later, when Lynn was hit by a car as he hobbled across a pedestrian crosswalk, that his perspective changed. He knew his hip contributed to the accident, and though he only suffered a broken wrist, he realized it was time for a change.
“I went to the Emergency Department at Baptist Beaches to have my wrist evaluated, and as luck would have it Dr. Lancaster was on duty that day,” he said. “After talking with him, I decided it was time to have my hip replaced.”
Dr. Lancaster performed Lynn’s surgery at the Center for Joint Replacement at Baptist Beaches, which is a specialized program providing pre-surgical education and post-surgical rehabilitation. Lynn was impressed with his quick recovery and the attentive care of the hospital staff.
“I was out of surgery at 2:30 p.m., in my room by 4:30 and eating dinner at 6,” Lynn said. “Then the therapists had me up and walking at 8 the next morning. They continued working with me, challenging me to walk further each time, and before I knew it I was on my way home three days after my surgery.”
Lynn continued to follow his therapy instructions at home and was cleared to return to work full-time a week after his surgery.
“I’m very thankful to Dr. Lancaster, his staff and the staff at Baptist Beaches for giving me my mobility back,” he said. “I feel great and am looking forward to going back to Augusta this spring to attend the 2010 Masters.”
